This case study details the successful transformation of BitReveal’s hosting company website, moving an outdated Joomla installation to a most-widely used platform on the internet, WordPress.
The project achieved significant improvements in performance metrics while maintaining brand consistency and user experience.
Challenge:
BitReveal’s existing website faced several technical limitations:
Outdated Joomla platform created maintenance challenges
Suboptimal performance metrics, particularly on mobile devices
Technical debt accumulation due to aging and unmaintained infrastructure
Need for a more sustainable, future-proof solution
However, the core of the website – including brand colors and the page design itself – was looking great. With that in mind, rather than opting for a complete redesign, we chose to preserve most of the existing content and visual elements, ensuring a seamless transition for users while dramatically improving the underlying technical infrastructure.
This strategy allowed us to focus our efforts on technical optimization without disrupting the established user experience.
Implementation:
Platform Migration
Complete migration from Joomla to WordPress – including recreation of all pages.
Implementation of Breakdance page builder for simpler, but more powerful page design.
Preservation of existing brand elements and content structure – ensuring a seamless transition for users.
Technical Optimizations
All images were converted from PNG/JPG format to the latest WebP format – resulting in smaller image sizes. That means there will be less bandwidth used and websites will load much faster (WebP images are up to 34% smaller than comparable PNG images)
Clean, efficient code structure through Breakdance builder. Breakdance outputs less unnecessary HTML elements than other page builders, resulting in smaller website blueprint – which also impacts the page loading speed.
Preserved most of existing content while improving technical foundation.
End result is a much faster loading website that saw huge improvements on Google’s PageSpeed reviews in various categories:
Performance: Doubled the mobile performance score – this metric includes the overall page loading times and general speed.
Accessibility: Increased accessibility scores. This metric assesses factors such as ease of navigation, alt text for images, and color contrast for users with visual impairments. The score here isn’t 100 because the brand color does not have a sufficient contrast ratio with the background – however, the color was instructed to be left as it was before by the customer.
Best Practices: Improved technical best practices score. Here, Google measures how well your page adheres to web development best practices. From using modern web technologies, optimized code, and secure connections, to including essential meta tags and managing JavaScript effectively. Here, the score wasn’t 100 because other plugins (which we’re unable to control) logged the errors to the browser’s console.
SEO: Achieved perfect 100/100 SEO scores on both mobile and desktop. This category focuses on how well your page is optimized for search engines, considering aspects such as metadata, structured data, and mobile-friendliness. Note that this doesn’t mean the page will automatically rank on the 1st page of Google, this is just a basic initial optimization.
Conclusion
This project demonstrates how strategic platform selection and technical optimization can dramatically improve website performance while maintaining brand integrity. The migration from Joomla to WordPress, combined with modern development practices and tools, resulted in a significantly more performant and maintainable website – whilst keeping the old user experience intact.
